  • October 2009, Work on the State Street Reconstruction Project in Portsmouth, NH has been scheduled to kick-off in mid-October. The nine-month-long construction effort will reveal a streetscape with many details not seen before in Portsmouth. Along with the standard pallet of improvements associated with a streetscape project of this nature, when completed the new State Street will exemplify pedestrian walkability and be a model of green urbanism: It will have a reduced roadway width, improved roadway definition, enhanced pedestrian crossings zones, and wider sidewalks. Its new urban rain gardens, bioretention tree wells and sand filters, will significantly reduce the level of stormwater pollutants being discharged from the roadway and hardscape into surrounding surface and ground waters.

It is anticipated that this project's construction will create considerable disruptions to daily life on State Street. The City is working diligently to reduce any negative impacts. The slogan adopted by the State Street Business Association is "Dig State Street."  Ironwood encourages patrons to continue to support their favorite State Street businesses during construction.
